Ok. So here we are a few days into it. So far, consumption has gone like this:
12/31/08: (post shopping trip) Caesar Salad with croutons (had old bread saved in freezer), seeded baguette with 2 oz of goat cheese and one head of roasted garlic, champagne (happy new year!). We made a double batch of chocolate chip cookies and froze 1/2 of the batter for later.
01/01/09: Breakfast was cereal. Lunch was pretzels and pirate booty (we took down the tree), and we had an early dinner of Taco Nite made with 1/2# of ground beef, beans, leftover soy cheddar, and some green onions and cilantro. Cracked a jar of salsa and opened a bag of tortilla chips. Mmmmmm.
01/02/09: Breakfast was waffles (Ray cooked!). and orange juice. Lunch was yesterday's leftovers re-purposed into tostadas. Dinner was at a friends house.
01/03/09: Breakfast was leftover waffles and orange juice. Cooked a single fried egg for each of us to go with. Lunch was meatloaf made with 1/2# of ground beef, celery, carrot, onion and breadcrumbs from old bread in freezer. Served it with skillet potatoes & green beans. Dinner (with friends) is spinach and goat cheese enchiladas from Hollywood Dish (love this cookbook!). Will serve with tortilla chips and a tossed salad with some sort of yogurt and salsa salad dressing I'll whip up.

Grocery Day 12/31/2008
Yes, its New Years Eve. We landed at about 10:30 am this morning. All are tired and in desperate need of a nap. What better time to try my first big shop!
I hit Raleys Foods on Oak Grove for all of the produce, canned, pet food, eggs, hamburger, and most of the boxed items. Register Total: $132.51
Then I hit Trader Joes for the rest of the meats, dairy (w/e milk), and a bottle of champagne (its NYE for cryin out loud). Register Total: $146.59
I ordered coffee on line (we are hopelessly hooked on Peets). Had a discount coupon and a gift card so that helped. Five pounds of Major Dickinsons Blend came to $57.55 after discounts and shipping. We will only need three of those five pounds for the month so the other two are going to be credited forward to February. $57.55 / 5= $11.51 x 3 = $34.53
I still need to hit Whole Foods for three gallons of milk (have coupons), tater tots, chicken nuggets, and three jars of pasta sauce. Also, of note: we haven't picked up our 'adult beverages' yet. Oops!
I'll update the post with that total as well.
So far: $313.63
Goal: sub $350 for the month
Remainder: $36.37

First Menu Plan and Shopping List
Well, here goes nothing...or maybe everything. I'm not really sure what we are getting ourselves into with this adventure but hopefully it will be worth it.
After perusing many cookbooks and consulting with my constituents (yes, the husband and the boy have a say in menu planning), I produced the following menu for the month of January. The menu is designed to appeal to all members of the household. That said, some days our toddler just can't be pleased so I included Children's Menu Options for such emergencies. Many meals are intended to be repeated either weekly or biweekly and are designated as such (x2 is biweekly x4 is weekly). You will notice that breakfast and lunch are omitted from the menu plan. We typically have cereal or oatmeal for breakfast Monday - Saturday. On Sunday we will have pancakes or waffles. For lunches we consume the previous evenings leftovers. Also, on Sundays we often skip lunch and enjoy a large (early) dinner which usually provides enough leftovers so that on monday night we don't have to cook at all.
Weekend Meals
Roast Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Vegetables
Spaghetti with Garlic Bread and Seasonal Salad
Spinach and Goat Cheese Enchiladas
Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Seasonal Salad
Quiche Lorraine with Seasonal Salad
Meat Loaf with Vegetables and Fresh Bread
Lasagna with Caesar Salad
Fish and Chips
Week Day Meals
Broiled Salmon over Brown Rice with Pot Stickers (x2)
Caramelized Salmon with Mashed Potatoes and Wilted Spinach (x2)
Soup and Salad Night (soup options: Split Pea with Ham, Chicken Noodle or Tortilla) (x4)
Shrimp and Vegetable Stir Fry over Brown Rice with Pot Stickers or Egg Rolls (x2)
Orange Chicken over Brown Rice with Pot Stickers or Egg Rolls (x2)
Taco’s served Family Style(x2)
Chef’s Special Pizza (x4)
Children’s Menu Options
Peanut Butter & Jelly served with Applesauce and Tortilla Chips
Turkey Hot dogs served with Fresh Fruit and Pretzels
Chicken Nuggets served with Peas and Tater Tots
Macaroni and Cheese served with diced vegetables and Applesauce
Desserts & Drinks
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Snickerdoodles
Ice Cream (dairy and non-dairy)
Whiskey/Bourbon
Amaretto
